COLOMBIA. 20 Pesos, 1868/49-POPAYAN. Popayan Mint. NGC MS-62.
KM-142.3; Fr-100; Restrepo-339.2. Alluring throughout, this coin exhibits strong design features and uncommon smoothness in the fields. Obviously handled with care for ages, the surfaces exhibit lovely golden-orange toning accents which result in seldom-rivaled charm. Far exceeding the quality of most survivors, including the Eldorado specimen which was graded AU-53, those two pieces representing the only examples of the date thus far seen by either grading service.

An interesting type, struck from dramatically retooled dies (of the KM-100 type), with close inspection showing legible amounts of the REPUBLICA DE LA NUEVA GRANDA obverse legend as well as the 1849 date beneath the updated design.
