GUATEMALA. 8 Pesos, 1864-R. Nueva Guatemala Mint. NGC AU-58.
KM-184; Fr-33. Mintage: 474. One-year type. A RARE and underrated issue that in the past eluded some of the foremost scholars in Latin American numismatics, such as famous Brazilian researcher Kurt Prober, who was unable to confirm the issue's existence until an example appeared in Sotheby's offering of the King Farouk of Egypt Collection in 1954. Since then, a small handful have surfaced, with a paltry 12 examples having been certified by NGC and PCGS combined. This coin is surpassed by only a single Mint State piece (an NGC-graded MS-62), which appears to have been never offered publicly since certification. As such, this piece, with its even appearance and flashy fields, could very well represent the finest example to come to market for many years to come.
Considering its minuscule mintage, it should come as no surprise that only one set of dies is known to have been used for this issue. Upon inspection of the date, identifiers are easily seen, with both the 6 and 4 numerals showing clear southward recutting.
From the Oro del Nuevo Mundo Collection.
Ex: Isaac Rudman Collection.
Estimate: $2000.00- $4000.00
