Following the breakaway of Central American territories from ruling Spain, a federal republic was created on the liberal ideals that rapidly took hold in the former colonies. Rising against this authority was general-turned-populist caudillo, Rafael Carrera. Appealing to the native majority in Guatemala, he briefly served as the first president of the independent nation from 1847-1848, and then served again from 1851-1865, with him being proclaimed "President for Life" in 1854. A dominant force in the politics of Guatemala for three decades, he maintained his position until his death at the age of just 50 in 1865.
