GUATEMALA. 20 Pesos, 1869-R. Nueva Guatemala Mint. NGC AU-55.
KM-194; Fr-38. Mintage: 16,000. One-year type. A bright example of this fleeting type with slight rub on the highest portions of the design and a few scattered marks over the surfaces that are commensurate with the grade.

Following the breakaway of Central American territories from ruling Spain, a federal republic was created on the liberal ideals that rapidly took hold in the former colonies. Rising against this authority was general-turned-populist caudillo, Rafael Carrera. Appealing to the native majority in Guatemala, he briefly served as the first president of the independent nation from 1847-1848, and then served again from 1851-1865, with him being proclaimed "President for Life" in 1854. A dominant force in the politics of Guatemala for three decades, he maintained his position until his death at the age of just 50 in 1865.

From the Oro del Nuevo Mundo Collection.

Estimate: $1800.00- $2400.00
