MEXICO. 8 Escudos, 1733-Mo F. Philip V. NGC MS-62.
KM-148; Onza-422 ("muy rara"). Important quality for this second year portrait issue, with fields that maintain remarkable vibrancy and surfaces that are free from all forms of distracting handling. Around the legends on both sides, traces of subtle orange tone appears, testifying to this coin's impressive originality. Perhaps surmounting all, is the strike, which is nothing short of exquisite; not only is the hair and ornate armor within Philip V's portrait superbly rendered, but unlike many (perhaps most), the shield is sharp as well. When considered cumulatively, this is one of the finest, if not the finest that exists, as only four examples have been graded Mint State. Analyzing these four closer, the two higher graded examples, both MS-64s, display lesser strikes (one slightly so and the other significantly), while the other piece, which received the same grade as this piece, is almost entirely blunted through half of the centers. The better of the MS-64s, which this coin compares most favorably to, realized $54,625 when it last appeared at auction in 2009. Considering the time passed since that piece has sold, we expect similar enthusiasm from collectors seeking to add this Mexican treasure to their numismatic holdings.

From the Oro del Nuevo Mundo Collection.

Estimate: $20000.00- $40000.00
