MEXICO. 8 Escudos, 1822-Mo JM. Mexico City Mint. Augustin I Iturbide. NGC AU-58.
KM-313.2; Onza-1777 ("muy rara"). Variety with AUGSTINUS spelling error in legend. Possessing qualities superior to most, not only does this coin retain choice surfaces that exhibit intense gleam, but it's strike (in a similar fashion to the previous lot) may be entirely unparalleled. Anecdotally, a scan of other examples seen at auction over the past two decades seems to confirm this, with many showing disqualifying planchet adjustments through the centers, while others exhibit designs that simply put, are soft. In contrast, the motifs on this coin are approaching the never-achieved "complete" level, with the slightest amount of flatness at the top of Iturbide's hair and sharpness in the crowned eagle and cactus design that appears unparalleled. This piece is surpassed in numerical grade by a single example. However, that piece, almost indisputably the lesser of the two coins, is very soft in the centers, to the point that Iturbide's ear is almost indistinguishable on his head. This coin is not only distinguished in technical merit but also, and perhaps more importantly, in terms of eye-appeal. For those reasons, it is absolutely worthy of consideration for the finest known.

From the Oro del Nuevo Mundo Collection.

Estimate: $12000.00- $17000.00
