MEXICO. 8 Escudos, 1822-Mo JM. Mexico City Mint. Augustin I Iturbide. NGC MS-62.
KM-313.1; Onza-1778 ("rara"). Variety with AUGUSTINUS spelling in legend. An incredible survivor of this elusive type, with surfaces that are clear of marks and highly original, displaying a thin veneer of orange tone that sits atop the gleaming fields. However, even more amazing than the surfaces is the strike. Almost always found with either weak central detail, die adjustment lines or peck marks in the flan, this piece suffers from none of these imperfections. In fact, the strike on this piece is the fullest we've seen -- and it's not even close! On Iturbide's portrait, his sideburns are complete, and run down the majority of his jaw line. Similarly, on the reverse, the crowned eagle, that on other examples borders on undiscernible, appears bold, with only the slightest detail missing from the highest feathers. Although this piece is exceeded by two examples in the NGC census, one has appeared on the market in recent years and, to put it rather bluntly, its appearance is vastly inferior due to planchet adjustments and missing detail, both of which are especially prominent on the eagle motif. Considering all, we feel confident in bestowing the "finest known" moniker to this coin, as it provides surfaces that are problem-free with the most complete rendering of the intended design. A truly legendary coin!
