PERU. South Peru (Republic of). 8 Escudos, 1838-CUZCO MS. Cuzco Mint. NGC MS-63.
KM-171; Onza-2082. REPUB. SUD PERUANO / CONFEDERACION legend type. Endlessly sought as a type, with the ever-captivating sunface design illuminating the obverse, while a symbolic collage comprised of a fortress, erupting volcano, cornucopia and sailing ship fills the reverse. A rather choice example thereof, this example was struck from fresh dies which have resulted in charming semi-reflective fields. As one might expect from the grade, very few marks appear in those fields and the designs remains clear as well. A patch of slight softness around 12 o'clock on both sides, which seemingly was caused by the pre-strike planchet adjustment process, appears to be the only imperfection that limits a higher grade. Even so, still among the finest seen, with five graded at this level between NGC and PCGS and only five appearing finer.
