CHILE. Peso, 1833-SANTIAGO I. Santiago Mint. NGC AU-55.
KM-82.2. Mintage: 88,244. A SCARCER date within this coveted 'Volcano' Peso series, this coin is further set apart from most by its exceptional originality. Blanketed in rich gray-brown tone that holds a hint of multicolored iridescence, the underlying surfaces retain a natural, delicate gleam with no marks that distract. A perfect strike rounds out the appearance. Truly, a coin that is "perfect" for the grade.

While not delineated in any major reference, it is interesting to note the design differences between the early 'Volcano' Pesos (1817-20) and later (1821-1834); namely, the globe atop the pillar goes from approximating the earth to being solid with a raised bisecting line. Other minor variations include the texture of the volcano itself and the shape of its smoke plume.

From the Matthew Orsini Collection.

Estimate: $2000.00- $3000.00
