PERU. Copper Centimo Pattern, 1855. Philadelphia Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-64 Gold Shield.
KM-Pn7. A noteworthy issue, not only because of its significant RARITY, but also because it represents the first coinage struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia for another nation. Denominations from this series of 1855-dated patterns were struck in gold (20 Pesos - 2 Pesos), silver (Peso - 5 Centimos) and copper (Centimo and 1/2 Centimo), with all being rare to extremely rare, but only the two copper denominations featuring the universally beloved sunface motif. Carefully preserved, this example displays pinpoint-sharp designs and surfaces that present smooth chocolate-brown color in most places with hints of pale blue iridescence and some original red color around portions of the protected designs. A small planchet clip is also observed near the edge at 4 o'clock and should serve as a important identifier for future pedigree research. Considering its elusiveness, role in early American minting history and overall charm, a coin that is sure to resonate with a broad base of collectors.
