MEXICO. 8 Escudos, 1711-MXo J. Mexico City Mint, Assayer J (Jose E. de Leon). Philip V. NGC AU-53.
Fr-6; KM-57.1; Cal-Type 293 # 2207; Cayon-9929; Grove-874; Oro Macuquino-385; Onza-385. Bar-Tipped Cross type. The only certified example of the date/cross variety on either the NGC or PCGS population reports. Crowned arms of Spain, consisting of Castile and Leon, Catalonia - Aragon, Sicily, Granada, Austria, Burgundy, Brabant, Flanders and Tyrol; denomination "VII" right (mostly off flan), mintmark and assayers letter "oxML" left; partial legend around; Reverse: Bar-tipped cross with fleurs-de-lis and curved ornamental accents in quarters all within a beaded border, legend around. A nice wholesome representative of the type with a bold full four-digit date and a nearly complete cross on the reverse, though the obverse exhibits evidence of being double struck. Signs of handling consistent for the grade with somewhat granular surfaces from prolonged saltwater emersion. The cross on the reverse appears to be a short-lived transitional design differentiated by the plain cross-bars and curved ornamental accents. A VERY RARE and attractive example of the variety displaying light butterscotch and marigold hued patina offering good eye appeal for this popular gold issue.

From the Las Colinas Collection.

Ex: 1715 Plate Fleet.

Estimate: $7000.00- $10000.00
