MEXICO. 8 Escudos, 1713-MXo J. Mexico City Mint, Assayer J (Jose E. de Leon). Philip V. NGC MS-65.
cf. Fr-6; cf. KM-57.1; cf. Cal-Type 294 # 2211; cf. Cayon-9940; cf. Grove-876; Oro Macuquino-389a; Onza-390. Tied for second finest of the date with one other example on the NGC population report, two finer (both NGC MS 66). Crowned arms of Spain, consisting of Castile and Leon, Catalonia - Aragon, Sicily, Granada, Austria, Burgundy, Brabant, Flanders and Tyrol; denomination "VIII" right (half off the flan), mintmark and assayers letter "oXML" left; partial legend around; Reverse: Bar and ball tipped cross with fleurs-de-lis in quadrants all within shaped border within beaded border, legend around. A boldly struck example with a nearly complete shield, full mintmark/assayers letter and a virtually complete date coupled with a crisp high relief cross, fleur de lis and virtually complete inner border with enough legend for correct orientation. An attractive representative of the type with crisp well defined design features exhibiting lovely satiny surfaces that's complemented by lustrous pale gold accentuated by hues of butterscotch in the crevasses of the shield. This fantastic Gem survivor offers good eye appeal with nearly all of the pertinent detail one could ask for from cob currency issue certain to see spirited bidding from advance collectors.

This highly interesting and intriguing issue that can be positively identified and linked to the 1711 "Royal" presentation issues struck two years prior. The reverse die which is shared by the 1711 "Royals" has several key identifying factors with the most prominent characteristics being several raised die lines in a downward outer angle in the upper left quadrant. Other diagnostics include extended points in the inner outline of the shaped inner border as well as several other minor features that match. In fact this particular example shares the same cross side die as the in this sale as well as the 1711 Royal from the 2014 NYINC Heritage auction and the March 2020 Aureo & Calico auction, both different example. We suspect that other dates of this issue that share a similar cross types were probably struck with Royal dies, though since Royals of this time period are extremely rare the very much needed in-depth study to confirm this could prove to be quite difficult.

From the Las Colinas Collection.

Ex: 1715 Plate Fleet.

Estimate: $10000.00- $15000.00
