MEXICO. Guadalajara. Silver Proclamation Medal, 1789. Charles IV. PCGS VF-30 Gold Shield.
Grove-C61; Med-149; Her-134. Obverse: Armored and laureate bust right, flanked by mint applied countermarks "FOR-CADA" and crowned "GA.", both within shaped borders all within a corded border, legend around; Reverse: Coat of arms of Guadalajara within a tulip border, legend around. A seldom-encountered medal, produced by local silversmith Forcada, with very few examples appearing in the last 20 years; as such it should be considered VERY RARE and highly desirable. This example, quite handsome overall, displays bold legends and some customary central softness. Light and attractive mottled gray tone appears in the centers with areas of richer coloration amongst the devices. The reverse exhibits a small hand-applied zig-zag pattern to the right of the shield, which is very reminiscent of the El Salvadorian scribe marks that were applied starting in 1834. Although unfortunate, similar alterations are not at all uncommon on Spanish-related proclamation medals, and the instance here does not impact the designs. Considering it's elusiveness, one can expect spirited bidding from advanced collectors of Mexico, Proclamation medals and coinage and Spain.

It is interesting to note that at the time of production Forcada was the most famous silversmith in all of colonial Mexico.
