MEXICO. Ferdinand VIII/New Spain Trade Merchants Gilt Silver Oval Medal, 1809. CHOICE UNCIRCULATED.
cf. Grove-F24b; Fonrobert-6484. Weight: 67.21 gms. By T. Suria. Obverse: AMADO FERNANDO VII EL COMERCIO DE N E DERRAMARA GUSTOSO SU SANGRE EN TU DEFENSA, uniformed and bareheaded bust right; Reverse: LA INDUSTRIA Y EL UALOR SE UNIRAN EN DEFENSA DEL MONARCA, Mars and Mercury (representing military might and commerce), standing facing, with heads facing one another, embracing one another, and holding spear and caduceus, respectively; around, implements of war and trade. All housed within a palm frond-like upper border with clasp at the top. Highly lustrous and brilliant, with a minimum of light marks. Though Grove lists this type in gilt bronze, he does not list it as here, in gilt silver. Quite SCARCE and attractive.
