GREAT BRITAIN. Great Britain - Peru. Dollar, ND (1797-99). George III. PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield; Countermark: UNC Details.
S-3765A; KM-638. Tied for second finest certified of the type with one other example on the PCGS population report, only one finer (MS 64+). Bank of England type I countermark; bust of George III within oval indent on a 1795-LIMEA IJ Peru bust 8 Reales of Charles IIII (IV). Overall an absolutely outstanding representative of the type in fairly SCARCE condition. The countermark is deeply applied with crisp features and corresponding flatness on the reverse showing minimal signs of handling indicative of being pulled from circulation soon after its application. This lovely survivor boasts a strong bold strike with sharp design elements of both the host coin and countermark; save for the slightest bit of envelope friction confined to the highest features of the bust as one would expect for the designated grade. The surfaces are smooth with more luster than one would expect from the assigned MINT STATE designation, equating to a choice example of for its certified state of preservation. Not to mention the incredible patina that immediately catches the eye; this is an example that very clearly sat for a prolonged period of time under the right circumstances undisturbed to create a fabulous looking beautiful piece. This colorful Crown displays lovely dove gray tone in the centers of both the obverse and reverse with accents of medium gray on the high points and crevasses displaying the slightest bit of a blue iridescent sheen moving to the peripheries to a richer coloration where mottled sunset and dusky hued patination is prevalent. In the opinion of this cataloger this is an example where the grade does not necessarily reflect the quality and though not the finest known it is certainly one of the nicest of these types I have had the privilege to either write a description about or see in hand personally. An excellent representative of the type perfect for the collector looking for choice and attractive examples to expand and add depth to their collection of fine numismatic treasure.

From the Trident Collection.

Estimate: $2000.00- $3000.00
