GUADELOUPE. Guadeloupe - France. Jeton de 30 Sous par Marteau, ND (1754). Louis XV. PCGS AU-58 Gold Shield.
Lec-45a; F-9131; VG-Unlisted; Maz-Unlisted. Countermarked for Marie-Galante. Very lightly handled and still offering a good deal of radiating luster, this attractive issue features an M-G on either side of the king's bust. This VERY RARE countermark represents Marie-Galante, a dependency island of Guadeloupe about 12 miles off its coast.

According to numismatic scholar Jean LeCompte author of numerous standard French colonial reference books, states that he is aware of two types of Jetons as host coins for this issue. He speculates that these were stamps by the Chamber of Commerce of La Rochelle to serve as payment to sailors leaving for Marie-Galante.

Estimate: $1000.00- $1500.00
