GREAT BRITAIN. Trio of Contemporary Counterfeit Countermarked Dollars (3 Pieces), ND (1797). George III. Average Grade: VERY FINE.
cf. S-3765A. Contemporary counterfeits with the small oval George III bust countermark on coins of (2) Mexico City 8 Reales (1777-FM and 1792-FM) and (1) Santiago 8 Reales (1794-DA). SOLD AS IS/NO RETURNS. An interesting gathering certain to pique the interest of collectors looking for a new area of study and to expand their knowledge and understanding of the series.

This prolific issue saw many imitations of the official hallmarks; in fact it is known that numerous counterfeiting operations were in production of such issues. This series is much more complex than many would believe with many variations such as genuine countermarks applied to forged hosts, forged countermarks applied to genuine hosts and counterfeit countermarks applied to the counterfeit hosts. As a whole this is a fascinating series of British numismatics worthy of further in depth research from the specialist.

Estimate: $350.00- $500.00
