Spain Banco de Espana 500 Pesetas ND (1938) Photo Proof Pick Unlisted. Based on the design elements here, and the penned "9.6.38" date in the margin. As we know, the 1938 issue was interrupted by the Civil War. The fall of Madrid in early 1939 to Francisco Franco and the Nationalists resulted in the notes being issued out of Barcelona. This Photo Proof was prepared before the move, with "Madrid" front and center for an issuing location and the portrait of Francisco Franco at left. It is very possible this denomination was proposed, but never went into further design process. For one, the denomination no longer had the buying power needed to fulfill its intended use, and two, the Nationalists could not mount enough resources to issue notes of this quality until after the war. Mounted on cardstock. A very important part of the history of the Bank of Spain. From the Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. archives. There will be no returns on this lot for any reason. https://currency.ha.com/itm/world-currency/spain-banco-de-espana-500-pesetas-nd-1938-photo-proof-pick-unlisted/p/4028-31109.s?type=CoinArchivesCurrency4028 HID08706262019 © 2020 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
