BYZANTINE. Bronze enkolpion (reliquary cross). 9th-11th centuries. (4.9cm wide x 11.8cm high). Cruciform Christ Pantokrator facing; barred HC XC above / Theotokos standing facing, orans; barred MP ΘV above. The two pieces hinged together, surmounted by suspension loop. Hollow reliquary case with nothing inside except shallow scratches and earthen deposits. Green patina, traces of earthen deposits, shallow cleaning scratches, part of lower hinge and swivel pin missing. A clear and attractive reliquary cross with etched impressions of Christ and Mary.
