Founder of the Société pour l'abolition de l'esclavage (Society for the Abolition of Slavery) in 1834, François-André Isambert was a French lawyer, historian and politician who corresponded with the British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society and can be found standing in the crowd immediately behind the speaker in Benjamin Robert Haydon's painting 'The Anti-Slavery Society Convention, 1840' (National Portrait Gallery Primary Collection: NPG 599).
