Otho(?) Æ 24mm of Mallus, Cilicia. AD 69. [KAICAP] M CЄBACTOC, laureate head to right / [...]ΩTΩ (sic), cult image of Athena Magarsis facing, arms extended, holding spear. RPC I 4024A (online); J. Muona, "An intriguing new coin from Mallus, Cilicia", in Scripta varia numismatico Tuukka Talvio, pp. 29-30 (Finnish Numismatic Society n. 6, Helsinki 2008). 7.72g, 24mm, 11h.

Near Very Fine. Extremely Rare; one of only four known examples.

From a private European collection.

The attribution to Mallus is certain due to the city ethnic on the reverse (although not clear in this example, it is distinguishable on others). The identity of the emperor, however, remains unknown. The style of the portrait points to a Julio-Claudian emperor and Jyrki Muona proposed that the portrait represented Otho, influenced by the style of the Antioch mint. He dismissed the possibility that the coin is of Galba, despite the idiosyncratic hooked nose which the RPC authors note to be more reminiscent of Galba, stressing that the portrait is of a younger man.
