Christian VII Speciedaler 1769-HSK MS66 NGC, Rethwisch mint, KM607, Dav-1305, Hede-7, Sieg-35. Mintage: 51. Hans Schierven Knoph as mintmaster. An extraordinarily elusive one-year type, struck at the newly established Rethwisch Castle mint in Schleswig-Holstein, which operated only between 1768-1769 as a branch of the royal mint in Copenhagen. The castle itself had come into the possession of the Danish crown through the Plön Succession Treatise of 1756, an arrangement by the last Duke of Plön, Frederick Charles, to name the King of Denmark as his heir in return for the king taking over his debts. Featuring a unique half-length bust of Christian VII, this is one of only three specimens that we have been able to trace coming to auction in recent years. Preserved throughout with an incredibly satiny finish punctuated by soft cabinet tones--and hailing from the famous collection of Holger Hede--the coin at hand very likely is one of the finest, if not the finest, known.
