Confederation Matte Specimen Probe 5 Francs 1922-B SP65 NGC, Bern mint, KM-Pn44, HMZ-2-1199b, Divo-42 var. (unlisted in matte finish), Richter-2-109 (R4). With diamond stop in obverse legend. By Paul Burkhard. An extremely rare matte striking of this iconic William Tell type, identified both by its special finish and the presence of a diamond-shaped stop between CONFOEDERATIO and HELVETICA. While the original numbers produced are not recorded, Richter notes that the SwissMint collection contains only 2 specimens, and assigns it an R4 rating, suggesting 2-5 known. Presently the only example so-certified by NGC (a lone PR63 Matte perhaps representing a misattributed piece), the fields appear remarkably brighter than most 20th-century matte Swiss coins, offering a clarity and appreciable level of quality not often seen.
