Pharnaces II was the son of Mithradates VI of Pontus. He betrayed his father to the Romans for which he was allowed to keep part of the Bosporan Kingdom. However, during the Roman Civil War between Pompey and Caesar, Pharnaces attempted to enlarge his kingdom and challenge the Romans. After an initial victory over the general Domitius Calvinus, Caesar initiated a lightning-fast campaign that led to Pharnaces' defeat at the battle of Zela. It was then that Caesar sent to the Senate the words for which he would always be remembered: "Veni, vidi, vici" - "I came, I saw, I conquered".
