Franz Joseph I Proof "Railway" 2 Taler 1857-A PR64 NGC, Vienna mint, KM2246.1, Dav-20, J-320, Herinek-821. Mintage: 1,644. Wreath tips between 'KA.' Commemorating the completion of the South Austrian Railway between Vienna and Trieste. Amongst the most collected commemoratives of Franz Joseph's long reign, this already low-mintage "railway" type seems predestined to pique bidder interest. Cloaked in a fine veil of champagne backlight which brings forth seafoam highlights on the reverse. Although this specimen admittedly does not carry a cameo contrast, the striking definition of the details against the surfaces produces a visual pop all its own, and one which very nearly elevates it past the upper bounds of its assigned grade.
