Louis XVI gold Louis d'Or de 24 Livres L'An 4 (1792)-A AU58 NGC, Paris mint, KM617.1, Fr-477, Gad-61. Second semester. Mintage: 32,842. An iconic rarity of French Revolutionary coinage, standing as the sole gold type produced during the Constitutional Monarchy and featuring the portrait of the soon-to-be-executed King Louis XVI. Presently one of only two certified by NGC, and the first that we have handled, the offering retains a plentiful degree of cascading watery luster in spite of its sub-Mint State grade, the strike appearing firm without the least evidence of doubling and only light rub atop the highpoints. Sure to come highly contested, and stemming from the collection of prominent French numismatist Victor Guilloteau.
