Great Britain
Kings of Mercia. Ceolwulf II (874-c. 879) Penny ND (c. 875-880) MS62 NGC, London mint, Liofvald as moneyer, Cross-and-Lozenge type, S-944, N-429 (ER), EMC-Unl., cf. MEC VIII-1170 (different moneyer), SCBI LXVII-651 var. (different dies). 1.44gm. CIOVLVV | F REX m (Mercian M) X (trefoil), diademed, draped bust of Ceolwulf right / LIOB | VΛL | D MO | NET (NE ligate), cross-crosslet with lozenge containing small cross. An impressive emission from the final King of Mercia, and quite simply a type that does not become available with any sort of regularity. Most frequently seen with edge damage when it is encountered at all, owing largely to the Viking ravages that following Ceolwulf's death and what certainly would have been a rampant hoarding of monetary wealth, the rarity of the present piece cannot be overstated--only two examples of this moneyer are recorded in the British Museum (both from different dies), none in the Fitzwilliam, while the Early Medieval Corpus managed by that institution records no finds within the last 20 years, the Portable Antiquities Scheme adding just 2 finds. Indeed, most known specimens stem from the famous Cuerdale Hoard discovered in 1840. Ranking as a firm Mint State with just light doubling to the strike and hardly any evidence of circulation, the quality of this coin can only be regarded as stunning; for comparison, the Millennia example, resold in January 2016 for $35,000, merely graded as an XF40. Additionally interesting for its peculiar use of a B-shaped letter for the F in the moneyer's name, this is likely one of the few opportunities collectors of the series will have to obtain an example.
