The Anarchy - Angevin Party. Matilda (1139-1148) Penny ND (c. 1141-1145) AU Details (Edge Damage) NGC (photo-certificate), Cardiff mint, Bricmer as moneyer, Cross Moline type, S-1326, N-936 (R), EMC-1200.0220, Boon-Type A, 33 (same dies). 0.78gm. MATILLIS [IMP], crowned bust right, scepter held before / [BRIC]MER : CA[IERDI], cross moline with lis in angles. An exceptionally rare issue, and one of the few attainable types from the period of the anarchy, featuring only the second woman to be portrayed on an English coin--the first being Offa's wife Cynethryth. Despite the losses to the edge, the overall preservation of this specimen is striking for the type, generally lacking in overall weakness and exhibiting one of the finest portraits of the "Lady of the English" we have been able to locate. Trace amounts of residual luster and russet tone are visible throughout, providing an accentuating visual pop to the devices.
Matilda was the daughter of King Henry I, and had been married to the Holy Roman Emperor Henry V in the early 1110s. Following the death of her younger brother William Adelin aboard the vessel White Ship in 1120, Henry nominated Matilda as his heir, though the throne was ultimately seized by Stephen of Blois. Asserting her claim briefly following the death of her father in 1135, Matilda was urged to press it further when the powerful baron Robert of Gloucester rebelled against Stephen in 1138, declaring his support for Matilda, to be followed by David I of Scotland. Although she had ample support, Stephen maintained the backing of the English Church and particularly the Pope, much of Matilda's support falling away after the calling of the Second Crusade in 1145. While the distribution of Matilda's mints attests to her support in the southwest of the country and Wales, it is interesting to note that the style of her pennies closely follows the 'official' Watford types of Stephen.
