Edward IV (1st Reign, 1461-1470) gold Ryal (Rose Noble) ND (1469-1470) MS63 NGC, Tower mint, Long Cross Fitchee mm, Light Coinage, S-1951, N-1549, Schneider-375 var. (trefoil within MEDIVM). 7.71gm. Variety with small trefoils. ЄD | : | • WΛRD' DI • GRΛ RЄX ΛnGL' • Z (retrograde) • FRΛnC • | • DnS' IB' (trefoil stops), Edward, crowned, standing facing in ship, shield in left hand, sword in right; Є in banner at stern, large rose on hull / (long cross fitchee) IhC' • ΛVT' • TRΛnSIЄnS • PЄR • mЄ • DIVm • ILLORVm: I • BΛT (trefoil stops), rose in radiant sun over floriate cross, crowned lions in angles, all within polylobe with small trefoils in spandrels. Valued at 10 Shillings, the Ryal was introduced in 1464 to address the rising price of gold on the continent. As gold coinage was worth more in continental Europe than England, a mass export of coinage for profit took place which resulted in a severe gold shortage. Accordingly, England's answer was to raise the value of the Noble from 6 Shillings 8 Pence to 8 Shillings 4 Pence, and the new Ryal was introduced as a rounded denomination for larger transactions. However, as businesses were accustomed to dealing with 6s 8d amounts, the 10s Ryal quickly became unpopular and was ultimately discontinued in 1470. As such, surviving examples are quite scarce, particularly in choice levels of preservation. Virtually the entirety of the strike is rendered in remarkable detail and is contoured by a radiant luster over a full and even flan. Interestingly, the word PЄR in the reverse legend appears to be recut from a stamp reading RЄX.
