Elizabeth I (1558-1603) gold Sovereign of 30 Shillings ND (1584-1586) AU Details (Repaired) PCGS, Tower mint, Escallop mm, Sixth Issue, S-2529, N-2003 (R), Schneider-781 var. (slight differences in punctuation). (escallop) • ELIZABETH • D' • G' • ANG' • | FRA' • ET • HIB' • REGINA •, Elizabeth enthroned facing within tressure, scepter in right hand, globus in left, portcullis at feet / (escallop) A • DNO' • FACTV' • EST • ISTVD • ET • EST • MIRAB' • IN • OCVLIS • NRS, royal shield over Tudor rose. Perhaps one of the most iconic gold coins introduced by the Tudors, and one which, despite Henry VIII's differences with his children, was clearly deemed important enough to have been minted during all of their reigns, and indeed was reproduced by James I. A piece whose beauty, as well as immense purchasing power, was well-recognized in its day, most surviving examples come down to us mounted or included in jewelry--frequently leading to cleaning, tooling, and repair work. While noted on the holder as repaired, most likely around 12 o'clock, though concealed by the holder, this should thus hardly be a significantly discounting factor, most coming much worse and this coin still presenting an admirable level of detail together with clear die polish in the fields. For comparison, we recently sold a very similar piece, also AU Details (Repaired), for $40,800 in our November sale.
