James II gold 2 Guineas 1687 MS64 PCGS, KM464, S-3399, Schneider-454. Far and away the finest example of this two-year type that we have seen, and an offering thereof that appears very nearly medallic in hand. Soaring design motifs stand in striking relief over the sleek golden fields, James' bust rendered to such a quality that the vast majority of the crowns and halfcrowns of his reign seem relegated to comparable insignificance. While the intricacy of the reverse arms renders these slightly less bold in appearance, this is certainly not for lack of sharpness, as the finest features of the crowns, harp, lions, and all except the lowest fleur-de-lis are precisely expressed to praiseworthy clarity. Shimmering golden luster ripples across the fields, supporting the near-gem designation bestowed by PCGS, with a faint clay red tone enhancing the presentation of the obverse legends. Not only is the offering the finest of its date yet certified, but it is also the only one to be graded at the Mint State level. Therefore, it would be exceedingly difficult for any collector to locate a representative that comes close to this piece's exquisite quality.
