Victoria Proof "Gothic" Crown 1847 PR63 PCGS, KM744, S-3883, ESC-2578 (R2). Plain edge. N over N in UNITA variety. Struck in pure silver (verified by XRF analysis). An incredibly iconic Victorian issue, and yet one that does not often occur at the choice level, the careful storage of so many Gothic crowns in coin cabinets frequently leading to cabinet friction and hairlines in the fields. Seeming nearly satin over the devices beneath a darkened argent tone, the offering presents an added flare of cobalt and teal in the open expanses, presenting the viewer with a truly singular eye appeal. Ranked by English Silver Coinage as an R2 compared to the only Scarce rarity assigned to the standard UN DECIMO edge type, we would note that the last example of the latter variety we offered in this grade brought $22,800 in November.
