Meiji gold 20 Yen Year 3 (1870) MS63 PCGS, Osaka mint, KM-Y13, JNDA 01-1, J&V-L1. Mintage: 46,139. An iconic and instantly recognizable rarity of the "modern" Japanese series, standing as the first year of production for this largest milled gold denomination. While the issue was reportedly not produced for circulation, perhaps suggesting a higher incidence of uncirculated examples, a quick survey of the census data provided by NGC and PCGS suggests only 30 pieces certified finer across both services, and those outranking this coin by only one to two grade points. Showing only the most minor wisps in the fields with a thin die crack running along the legends on the obverse, and an all-in-all standout selection.
