Scotland
James V gold Crown (20 Shillings) ND (1526-1539) MS62 NGC, Holyrood (Edinburgh) mint, Second Coinage, S-5370, Burns-Unl. (seemingly a mule of Burns-pg. 246, 3 and Burns-pg. 247, 4a), SCBI XXXV-Unl. 3.38gm. Type III/IV mule with rounded base on shield, trefoil stops on obverse and colon stops on reverse. (sun) IΛCOBVS • 5 • DEI • GRΛ • REX • SCOTORVM (trefoil stops), arms of Scotland, crowned, flanked by two saltires (value) / (crown): CRVCIS: ΛRMΛ: SEQVΛMVR, cross fleuree with thistles in angles. A coveted type that ascends to an absolute conditional rarity at the Mint State level, few examples coming down to the present day at all, let alone without any evidence of circulation or damage. James' coinage had, like that of his father, suffered from a general shortage throughout the early part of his reign, owing largely to the hoarding of gold and silver. While this seems to have largely been resolved around 1526-1527, leading to the production of this so-called "Abbey" crown that dominated Scottish commerce for over a decade, they too became hoarded after 1539, and were replaced by a plethora of billon Bawbee coinage. Presently the second finest of only 5 certified, this specimen very nearly possesses a choice visual appeal, with the Newman example, an MS64, bringing $22,325 in our January 2014 sale by comparison. What makes this specimen even more interesting, however, is what appears to be a muling of Type III and IV dies, a pairing not recorded either by Burns or the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles, and altogether missing from the Douglas, Dundee, and LaRiviere collections.
