Spanish Netherlands
Brabant. Charles V of Spain (1506-1555) gold Carolus d'Or ND (1521-1566) MS65 NGC, Antwerp mint, Fr-56, Delm-515 (R1), Vanhoudt-220AN (R1). 5.28gm. (Hand) KAROLVS D: G • ROM • IMPE: Z • HISPAR • REX, crowned, armored, three-quarters figure of Charles facing, sword in right hand, globus cruciger in left / (Crown) DA MIHI • VIRTVTE • CONTRA • HOSTES • TVOS:, imperial shield over double-headed eagle. 2nd issue (from 20th February 1521). An exceedingly scarce level of preservation in which to locate this type, with surviving examples almost universally found with heavy circulation wear over the devices. Every feature of the design appears crisp and attentively cut, most of the letters with prominent squared-off edges, while luster abounds throughout. Though the grading companies do not display population information for the type, this is almost certainly the finest certified.
