BITHYNIA. Calchedon. Ca. late 3rd century BC. AV stater (18mm, 8.43 gm, 11h). NGC AU 5/5 - 1/5, tooling. Posthumous issue in the name and type of Lysimachus, ca. 205-195 BC. Diademed head deified Alexander III right, with horn of Ammon / ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ / ΛΥΣΙΜΑXOΥ, Athena seated left, Nike in right hand crowning royal name, resting left arm on grounded shield decorated with ridges and gorgoneion head boss, transverse spear beyond; EY monogram to inner left, bull charging left and ΘΡΑ in exergue. Müller -, cf. 358 for similar type with bull in exergue (Uncertain Macedonian mint). Thompson -. Unrecorded variety. cf. Classical Numismatic Group, Mail Bid Sale 58 (19 September 2001), lot 370 for another example. Well-struck from beautiful style dies on matte surfaces.
