The portrait style of this coin likely attempts an official issue from the Laodicea ad Mare mint, which would align with the reverse type, copying an issue from Severus's wife, Julia Domna, as Hilaritas is not a proper reverse for this emperor. The obverse legend is correct for issues from AD 198-202. These eastern imitations may have been produced for use from the Roman outskirts as trade coinage along the Silk Road.
