Armenia
Cilician Armenia. Levon I (1198-1219) Denier ND (c. 1208) MS60 NGC, Sis mint, CCS-133b (under Antioch), Bed-10. 0.83gm. + RЄX ARMENOR (ME ligate), crowned head facing / + LЄO DЄI GRATIA, cross pattée. An extremely rare Armenian portrait issue, evidently struck in concordance with the Antiochene rather than the Armenian standard. It has been supposed that this type may have been produced by Levon in anticipation of his capture of Antioch, at which he had nearly succeeded in 1203. Despite two assaults on the city in 1203 and 1208, Levon was unable to capture it and enforce his claim against Bohémond IV. Exquisite Mint State quality, with a nearly full portrait of Levon and an overall quite bold strike, with only slight areas of weakness appearing at the peripheries. An elusive opportunity and worthy of close attention.
