Great Britain
Kings of Mercia. Burgred (852-874) Penny ND (late 860s-874) AU58 NGC, Hereferth as moneyer, Lunette type, S-942D, N-423, SCBI LXVII-611 (different dies), EMC-1004.0073 (different dies). 1.27gm. BURGRED REX m (bar of contraction over X, Mercian M), diademed bust of Burgred right / Đ MoN | hEREFER |ETΛ, moneyer's name in three lines in and between two unbroken lunettes. A virtually Mint State offering of this somewhat scarcer Mercian king, Burgred's portrait rendered in a typically abstracted manner which, owing to a careful cutting of the features and original surfaces, may nearly be called "fine style." One of the most handsome examples we have come across, and a piece of singular eye appeal.
