Edward III (1327-1377) gold Noble ND (1356-1361) AU58 NGC, Tower mint, Pre-Treaty Period, Series Gd, S-1490, N-1181, Schneider-46 (same dies). 7.73gm. (large annulet) Є (small annulet) | DWΛRD x DЄI x GRΛ x RЄX x ΛIIGL x F (retrograde) x FRΛIIC x D hy | B (saltire stops), Edward standing facing in ship, shield in left hand, sword in right / +IhS x ΛVTЄm x TRΛIICIЄIIS x P x mЄDIVm x ILLORVm x IBΛT, large floriate cross with Є at center, crowned lions in angles, all within polylobe with trefoils in spandrels. A rarer early noble type from Edward's reign, and one which a survey of recent auction records suggests might only be the fourth of this particular subseries to have become available in the last decade and a half. Though admitting minor weakness, the strike is particularly sharp, the king's face expressive, while thankfully none of the rampant doubling that sometimes appears on the type is present. Moreover struck on a full flan with wonderful clarity to the legends, and a truly exceptional example. Mislabeled on the holder as S-1516 (Post-Treaty Period).
