Victoria gold Sovereign 1861 MS64+ NGC, KM736.1, cf. S-3852D (this variety not listed), Marsh-44 (same). First 1 over inverted 1 in date. A splendid near-gem sovereign that swirls effortlessly with cartwheel luster, its surfaces omitting all but the most unobtrusive of marks while even the smallest details of the design find full expression. Quite clearly struck over an inverted 1 in the date, interestingly this variety does not seem to be noted in either the Standard Catalogue of British Coins or Marsh's The Gold Sovereign, though it is recorded in both NGC and PCGS's census reports. Presently the single finest for all varieties of the date certified by NGC, with only 2 "standard" pieces ranking finer at PCGS.
