Great Britain
Edward VIII gold "Abdication" Medal 1936 MS67 NGC, Eimer-Unl., BHM-4277, CM-347d. 35mm. 42.15gm. By L.E. Pinches. Mintage: 100. A virtually flawless medal privately produced by John Pinches Ltd., fielding even matte texture over the surfaces that seems to emphasize the sharpness of the design features to an even greater extent. No official (Royal Mint) medal was struck, because of the controversy that raged in 1936 over the Prince of Wales, who became King upon his father's death, but was determined to marry an American woman who had been twice divorced. This was not acceptable in England at that time, on two counts: she was a commoner, and divorced. However, a number of privately made medals were created at the time, by those who supported the Duke and for souvenir sellers.
