Ferdinand VII "Royalist" 8 Reales 1823 LM-JP AU50 NGC, Lima mint, KM117.3, FC-85b, Grunthal/Sellscopp-287d. Overstruck on an 1823 Peruvian "Libre" 8 Reales (cf. KM136). A notable relic of the shifting influences and loyalties in Peru following its liberation from the Spanish empire in 1821, these overstruck 8 Reales were produced within a very limited time frame between June 17-July 18, 1823, during which time Royalist forces under generals Canterac and Valdez occupied the city after it had been contested between both Republicans and Royalists. Prior to the destruction of the Lima mint and the removal of its equipment to the fortress Real Felipe, contributions collected to support the Royalist cause, in the form of the recently minted "Peru Libre" Republican 8 Reales, were overstruck with conventional colonial dies. Very few of these coins survive down to the present day, let alone in sparsely circulated condition with a clearly visible host date (to the right of IND on the reverse). For comparison, the last example in this grade we've been able to locate brought $2200 hammer last January.
