Peru
Republic gold "Mejia-Arequipa Railroad" Medal 1868 MS63 NGC, Fonrobert-Unl. 37mm. 35gm. A fully choice specimen showcasing a pleasing light toning and only few scattered surface marks, all within the confines of the designation. Struck to commemorate the inauguration of the Railroad from Mejia to Arequipa, which was authorized in 1864 and eventually commissioned by Vice President Diez Canseco at a cost of 12 million Soles, this medal is very rare in gold with only a handful of confirmed examples among which this is one of the finest. Interestingly, the transcription of the July 30, 1868 session of the Peruvian Congress mentions the proposed distribution of 71 gold and 71 silver examples to its members, with two congressmen (one Mr. Ibarra and one Mr. Bernales) noting that this distribution was not possible until the subject matter was deemed "legal and convenient", recommending that the aforementioned medals were thus stored away.
