NGUYEN DYNASTY (ANNAM): brass religious amulet (28.04g), S&H p. 130, 34 x 70mm, in the shape of a bài badge, ngu vi ton ong ("Five Honored Gentlemen") within central rectangle, flanked by two flying dragons facing a flaming pearl, holed on badge knob decorated with floral patterns, VF-EF, ex John Sylvester Jr. Collection. The Five Honored Gentlemen (or Commanders) are deities in the traditional religion of Tu Phu ("Four Palaces"). They rank below the supreme Mother Goddess Dao Mau and the Four Mother Goddesses of the four realms (i.e., Heaven, Mountains, Water, and Earth), and are worshipped in various temples across Vietnam.
