ABBASID: temp. al-Mu 'tamid, 870-892, AR donative dirham (2.55g), al-Muwaffaqiya, AH270, A-240Z, totally anonymous, mount removed, 2nd known example of this important type, VF, RRR. Al-Muwaffaqiya was a military camp set up by the Abbasid army for their defeat of the Zanj Rebellion in southern Iraq. Normal Abbasid gold and silver were struck there in AH268-270, but the camp was abandoned after the defeat of the Zanj, which occurred early in 271. This is the second reported example of the anonymous donative issue of al-Muwaffaqiya (the other example, dated AH269, is in the Tübingen collection).
