JAPAN: AE charm (47.51g), CCH-2799. Mandel-1.18.21, 55mm, Arhat charm, zhou yuan tong bao // Nantimitolo, the Buddhist immortal, known as the Dragon Taming Lohan, VF. This inscription on this charm was used on the coins of the Chinese Later Zhou Dynasty issued by Shizong. As the emperor of this small dynasty did not have enough copper for casting coins, he took Buddhist statues, melted them and then used the metal for casting "zhou yuan tong bao" coins. For this reason, many people consider this inscription on charms as an efficient protection against evil and demons. Likely cast during the reign of Meiji.
