FRANCE: Napoleon III, 1852-1870, AE medal, 1870, 32mm, Satirical Battle of Sedan, NAPOLEON III LE MISERABLE, bust of Napoleon III in Germany uniform, PARJURE & TRAITRE below // VAMPIRE DE LA FRANCE, PARIS 2 DEC. 1851 - SEDAN 2 SEPT 1870, eagle with spread wings standing facing on thunderbolt, AU. This wonderful piece is one of many examples of engraved coins and tokens, and genuine coins of the period that bear countermarks, which display satirical references to the defeat of the French army under Napoleon III by the Prussians at Sedan - a small town near the border with Belgium. In the critical battle in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, the French were humiliated when the Emperor ordered the white flag to be raised, formally surrendering to the Prussians the following day and subsequently being sent into exile in Germany.

Estimate: 75-100 USD
