GREAT BRITAIN: brass medal (2.51g), ND, 28mm, service medal for the Mesopotamian campaign of WWI, soldier in pith helmet standing left, leading the reins of a saddled camel, facing rising sun radiating across the sky, palm trees & dunes in background, MESOPOTAMIA above, attached with red-white-blue tricolor ribbon, EF. Between 1914 and 1918, British and Indian troops fought against the Ottoman Turks in Mesopotamia (now Iraq). After many setbacks, they finally took Baghdad in March 1917. This marked the high point of a long and tragic campaign characterized by bitter fighting in a harsh climate.
