The first series, denominated in Mil (1000th of a Pound), was issued in 1948, to alleviate the chronic shortage of coins during the early months of Statehood, when the country was still embroiled in the War of Independence. Includes 50 Mils, PMG AU-55 Exceptional Paper Quality; and 100 Mils, PMG EF-40. Both are seemingly problem-free. Designs feature floor mosaic from ancient Beit Alpha synagogue.
