Mitau Gymnasium is the oldest academic institution in what is now Latvia. Johann Gottleib von Groshka, the Professor of Physics and Natural Sciences and later Vice Rector of the Gymnasium, was also medical adviser to the Russian Imperial family. In 1819 he endowed a gold prize medal for an essay on a medical subject to be written in Latin.
